In the conclusion of the three-part story "The Secret of the Swordfish", Professor Mortimer and Captain Blake race the clock to finish their secret weapon before the evil Yellow Empire can finish them. Deep within their underground hiding place, the Professor and the Captain expected to be safe, but Colonel Olrik and his henchmen somehow manage to be everywhere. Is there enough time left to save the world?..."The Adventures of Blake and Mortimer" have much in common with the early Tintin stories, including an exciting narrative and wonderful graphic artwork from an earlier era. Like Tintin's author Herge, Edgar Jacobs worked from the headlines of his day. Weapons and plots are eerily reminiscent of the Second World War and the Cold War that followed. The plot deals in more than a few stereotypes, but it's a fun read. Well recommended.
Finally, after putting out other Blake and Mortimer stories out of order, Cinebooks is doing the first Blake and Mortimer story in the usual 3-part format. Yes, this is really #3, not #17. And its the third of a 3-parter, so best to have the other 2 albums."Secret of the Swordfish" is set in 1946/49 (not quite clear), but one that is different from our history. If you've read the other albums, you may have seen hints of this story.In it, just after WWII, it seems that the world is posed on the brink of another war, this from the Yellow Empire based in Tibet! Under the control of a military dictator, the Yellow Empire has been preparing for war! But some of the free nations are not sitting around ideally. In England, they are working on a secret weapon, the Swordfish. This is being lead by Professor Mortimer. Captain Blake is heading up security.But then, a war breaks out, when the Yellow Empire sends missiles against the world capitals!! (needless to say, the follow-on albums make NO mention of this destruction). This is followed by a blitzkrieg attack by the armies of the Yellow Empire, and it seems most nations fall. (its not clear who is still free).But Blake and Mortimer get out of England on their way to a secret English base in the Middle East to complete the secret weapon. They are pursued by Col. Olrik, an Eastern European who is the head of security for the Yellow Empire. This is the first meeting of these 3, as Olrik will be a persistent threat to B&M thru most of the series.Finally, after all their trials, they get to the secret base and begin building the new superweapon: The Swordfish. But a traitor seems to have slipped in. They must scramble to complete at least some of the superweapons to defend the base from an invading force. Once that's done, they must move quickly to take down the Yellow Empire! For, you see, the Emperor is mad. If he can't control the world, no one will. If they don't stop him, he will destroy the world!Interesting that by and large in the followup volumes, most of the events are ignored, other then references to the Swordfish.The next album will a new story: The Oath of the Five Lords before we get another reprint of a classic Jacob's story, the Time Trap. Can't wait.
Admittedly politically incorrect, but this comic is a great read. This is the conclusion to a great story arc involving Blake and Mortimer. These books by Jacobs feature artwork that you just want to sink into. (Just search Blake and Mortimer in images to get a taste of the artwork.) The background recall some of the great Tin Tin stories. Yet reconfigured into a sort of James Bond world circa Dr No but with an earnest, endearing and somehow retro-cool British duo instead of James Bond. If you're looking for just one stand-alone book to sample them, I would recommend The Yellow M. The Mystery of the Pyramid is also great, but is 2 volumes.
Great read- wish more Cinebook material was sold for the Kindle. This series is not publicized as much as it should be.
